What happened to customer service?

August 20, 2007

Finally flagging down a bartender, I kindly gesture for a paper and pen, which is handed to me. As I write my drink order, the bartender takes someone else’s order.

Is this right? Courteous?

  1. Well, hmmm, depend on situation…

I wouldn’t mind if I take pen and paper and allow the employee to move on to other customer to reduce the line while giving me time to write down…because I would have to make customers before me waiting and waiting…

However, if the employee see me finish writing something and move on to another customer without coming back to me, I would have been upset.

Or employee assume that you need paper and pen, like giving phone number or address to someone else, because that could happen to bartender several times?

it depends….. if you had paper and pen with you and wrote down what you wanted and handed the note to the bartender. he would act on your request immediately. you were not prepared in first place…

  3. bartender wants fast and get good tips from others. probably you can bring the pad and pen to write down your drink order. bartender will take your order before go to others….
However, it is really rude for bartender turns to customers when you were the “first” order. i guess “fast service” gets best tips?

  4. It happened to me all the time years ago when I went clubbing. Sure, at first I was pissed and feel offended. But, a little later, I realized I understand what bartender had to do.

They depend tips for living so if there are people waiting for their turns to order, with you standing to write down what you want, it takes seconds longer or even a minute or two longer.

That made one or two person behind you get frustrated, not only because of you but also because of bartender for not getting the job done fast.

Meaning then no tips for bartenders. Remember, people like fast services, if they get fast services, they tip better. So, I learned my lesson and whenever I go to clubs/bars, I always have paper/pen with me just to speed things up. But only for bars/clubs, I don’t carry paper/pen anywhere else as far as I know of.

    It’s just a suggestion.

Imagine the bartender being pushed to meet the customers’ demands while someone is writing down a message. Is it right? I do not know if it’s right, but I can see that it is very difficult. Hearies are so clueless about courteous with deaf people.

  6. He probably would have thought you are just writing down a phone number for your new friend or you just needed to write notes. The bartender needs to earn tips so he goes to another customer while waiting for you to finish. It happens all the time at bars wherever I go. I know it can be frustrating and remember the bartender is under presser to rake in $$$ for the owner.

It depends on where you are at and the traffic of people at the bar.

    =)

  7. Come on people go in and out every day as for deaf writing on note that was old fashioned wish we have new note pad that can be typed fast. All deaf and hearing equal even hearing is slow, too looking in purse give me break! Don’t use this as
racism at work people have to learn communcate with deaf if just one used “no audism” I can understand this but otherwise I think it is so silly?

It’s common for bartenders to be that way. It is a fast pace job that requires immediate service. But, yes it can be looked at as being rude, but if your not ready to order the bartender will pass you by and hit the next customer as he is out for good tips and fast service.

Hey “huh”, no offense but you, my friend, sound like a “stupid ass”. Your post barely made any sense.

It is no big deal if someone posts a comment using bad English but when you try to insult someone, at least try not to sound like a jackass.

    Or a best suggestion.

Write beforehand and have it ready ?

I always plan ahead or encourage others to do the same. Would be amazed of the results at the end !

  12. May I vent? As a Deaf womin, I need to vent of what just took place this week.
In just one mere week, through my health insurance in which I was directly told that they approved of the first visit for naturopathic or acupuncture treatment.
To my shock, both doctors refused to hire an ASL interpreter and blatantly told me to go find someone else to work with.
Dr Lu, the acupuncturist told me flat out he refuses to sign up for account or pay out of his pocket for an ASL interpreter even while knowing the insurance will reimburse him.
I then asked if he’d be willing to write back and forth, he said yes.
A while later in the same day, he calls back and made up excuses why he suddenly couldn’t see me as it would just not be enough time to write back and forth. I said fine, just do the treatment alone and rely on the medical form I’d fill out. He kept on being evasive and as soon I blurted out (through the VP) “Are you discriminating me?” He curtly said “Go find someone else.”
    I sat there stunned.
Twice in a row – two different doctors REFUSED to deal with me.
Then we wonder why so many of us are having a hard time getting healed when we need it the most?!

    Another Angry Deaf Womin

  13. I hear you, or as my husband says I see you. I am sorry you have not written more. Is there more that you write about besides Angry Deaf Man?
